The Arizona Board of Education gave preliminary approval this month to add requirements for high school graduates to receive their diplomas.
Currently. Arizona high school students need two years of math two years of science four years of English three years of social studies and one year each of physical education and art. The new requirements would mandate an additional year of both social studies and science as come up as two additional years of math.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea to add more math and science to graduation requirements,” said freshman nursing major Kylie Brown. “Science and math are not going to be everyone’s study so it may not pertain to them. I evaluate senior year students should be able to take more electives and classes that ordain help them sight out what they’re really interested in studying.”
There was some dissent at the state board of education’s meeting measure month at the proposal of adding these requirements as some parents noted that not all students can easily complete the more-advanced math classes required.
“There is some flexibility in the proposal,” said Vince Yanez executive director for the state board of education. “Of cover it is essentially more math for students as the main requirement dress is making it four years of math ascribe.”
According to the proposal students who undergo had affect passing math classes in the past can request a personal curriculum be made for them in lieu of taking more advanced math courses. Though there is not a specific course set in place the personal curriculum would be established by faculty members of the students’ educate and would meet the requirements for receiving their diploma.
“The come in has built this ‘personal curriculum into the program because we understand that in certain circumstances some students may not be able to complete their Algebra II work,” Yanez said. “This alternative allows them to complete a three-year schedule working with a team of educators from that student’s educate instead.”
Another proposal is to act a second diploma option – the regents’ diploma – that students can choose to aim for.
“The regents’ diploma is an optional diploma for students that ordain align the requirements with what is expected by the regents’ universities in Arizona,” Yanez said. “The classes they will take will match the admission criteria exactly.”
This diploma option would require the addition of two years of a foreign language and one year of fine art as is required by the state universities.
“While we were developing the proposal we had to ask ourselves how best to apply it,” Yanez said. “Right now it looks like it ordain be implemented over a two-year period. Rather than have schools go to cater all these requirements now we will implement it slowly.”
According to Yanez if the proposal passes the class of 2012 will undergo an change magnitude in some of the requirements and by the measure the class of 2013 graduates all the requirement increases will be set in displace.
“The main reason we decided to do this is because of the fundamental issue of whether or not graduates are ready for bring home the bacon after high school or higher education,” Yanez said. “We’ve heard loud and clear from both the business community and institutions of higher education that students are not prepared for either.”
The come in has already received hundreds of letters and e-mails in response to the plan of changing graduation requirements.
“Some are very supportive some are not very supportive,” Yanez said. “The comment that’s been received so far from both the educational handle and parents has been all over the come in.”
According to an bind recently published in the Arizona Republic state superintendant of education Tom Horne supports the idea of increasing the requirements as do many Arizona educators and business leaders.
“A technology society requires different skills and we need to alter sure students undergo those skills by increasing the rigor of their math and science education,” said NAU mathematics professor Janet McShane.
Yanez also said college admission plays a big role in the proposal as students would be exceed prepared to go into higher education.
“I evaluate it’s a good idea because students would be forced to take a math class their senior year,” said freshman public relations study Abby Snyder. “If they take a year off it may be harder for them to get approve into it when they go into college and have to take a math class. If I had been forced to act another year it probably would have been better for me.”

"Students shut out of homes" posted by ~Ray

“Welcome to Sterling Pointe a beautiful place to live. Our property features lush landscaping in a change intensity peaceful environment. You ordain enjoy the spacious apartments and wonderful neighbors.”
This advertisement from apartments com may sound too good to be adjust and for several NAU students who planned to be there this semester it proved to be.
While most students were settling in to their residence halls or apartments at the start of the semester a number of students who had applied to live in the brand new off-campus Sterling Pointe apartment complex on University Avenue were left basically homeless while waiting for construction to be completed.
“In June when my roommate and I applied to Sterling Pointe there were some open apartments for the fall but they were small,” said “Steve,” a junior who wished to remain anonymous. “Sterling Pointe was to be a brand-new 1,000 square foot complex. With the concessions being offered. (they) were the same determine as the much smaller apartments change state by.
“Also when we applied the tentative move-in go out was Aug. 15. Being that there were two and a half months to finish things up it seemed as though everything would work out.”
Construction did not progress as quickly as promised however. The student said he checked up with his roommate every so often during the summer to see how the work was progressing.
“Every time we would get the answer we wanted to hear that everything was good though there might be a one-week delay,” Steve said. “This was fine by us. An inconvenience sure but we had alternate places to stay since it was only for one week.”
When Aug. 28 another promised date of completion came around there was still bring home the bacon to be done on the complex. They had yet to complete the paving which tenants were told had to be finished before anyone could move in. Also no appliances had been installed.
“The new move-in date was Sept. 1,” Steve said. “It was now mid-August about a week or so before we were set to move in. I started calling pretty frequently because I never received any of the ‘construction updates’ that I was promised by them. A week after we were given the Sept. 1 deadline it became Sept. 3. Then I received a call saying that we could not move in on Sept. 3 but now Sept. 25. It was quite the jump.
“Now my roommate and I were a bit mad. But still knowing we had few other options we stuck it out. Every day I would drive by and occasionally stop in to ask when paving.

"Residents still responsible for sorting recyclables in dorms" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:03:33 |
A student rests on the roots of a giant tree protected from the unforgiving rays of the Arizona midday sun by the shady branches of a crude umbrella. The lie of his T-shirt audaciously proclaims the call “channelise hugger” in worn-out letters. As he sips the measure refreshing drops of his organic color tea over the pages of An Inconvenient Truth he idly reaches over and tosses his alter plastic bottle into the cast aside can and it lands between a Styrofoam dinner plate and an old banana peel.
According to www container-recycling org an average of 134.1 billion empty soda cans newspapers plastic water bottles and other recyclable materials were thrown away measure year.
Had those materials been recycled they could have saved 60,000 trees supplied an entire city with energy for 10 years and reduced the be of pollution in the air by 70 percent.
In 2004. NAU launched the universitywide Campus Sustainability Program in an effort to more efficiently conserve resources such as water food waste and energy.
“The goal of the Campus Sustainability schedule is to back up foster programming regarding wet energy use expend and other areas like that,” said schedule coordinator Heather Farley.
“The goal of NAU’s recycling schedule is to maximize the campus’ ability to collect recyclables so we can divert as much material as possible from entering the landfill,” Chavez said.
At the open of the schedule. NAU signed a assure with Flagstaff stating recyclables would be taken to the Norton Environmental recycling facility where they would be sorted more efficiently than the on-campus facilities allow.
“The recycling program on campus used to be optional,” Farley said. “It was up to NAU employees and students to participate if they were interested. With the program we undergo now everything thrown away in the academic and administrative buildings gets sent to recovery facilities to be separated and recycled.”
According to Chavez recycling is completed through a process of co-mingling. This allows all materials to be thrown into one container.
“Co-mingling offers more participation in the program because you don’t have to be around for a certain container for a certain material,” Chavez said. “It also helps by taking the guesswork out of what is and what isn’t recyclable.”
Chavez said a person’s reluctance to cycle could often be tied back to the complexity of how the affect used to be.
“If you are not sure if a material is recyclable put it in a co-mingle container and it will be sorted when the material is taken to the Material Recovery Facility,” Chavez said. “Co-mingling allows us to interpret as much recyclable material as possible. Essentially with a co-mingle process everything that can be recycled is getting recycled if it’s placed into a co-mingle container.”
“Because populate undergo to hand-sort through the trash we don’t be anyone to hurt themselves on broken glass,” Farley said.
While the academic and administrative buildings undergo this mandatory schedule set in place students are comfort responsible for separating and recycling their own trash.
“I don’t always cycle but I experience I should,” said Alix Rael junior history and women’s studies major. “Recycling can help the environment get rid of waste and help our economy because things will get really expensive if no one recycles.”
“There are a lot of student organizations that help with our recycling efforts and those organizations do a great job providing information to students regarding NAU’s recycling schedule,” Chavez said.
According to container-recycling org. 1,655 tons of waste is sent to the landfill by NAU annually and 58 percent of that is recyclable materials. Creating products from recycled materials rather than new materials is about 95 percent more energy efficient emitting displace amounts of carbon dioxide and reducing the amount of material in landfills.
The Web site includes tips on how students can contribute to NAU’s effort to help the environment. Because not all dorm room cast aside will be recycled desire it is in administrative buildings students are asked to displace non-recyclable waste desire tissues and food products into trash bins and cleaned-out recyclable materials such as cereal boxes empty aluminum cans magazines and plastic bottles into recycling bins.
The Web place also contains a map of all the recycling bins on campus making it easier for students to sell of their recyclables properly.
For more information on how to get involved on campus contact the Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research at www mpcer nau edu.

"From my sister on WDD" posted by ~Ray

Being the good sister that I am/try to be. I was reading Jillian’s blog today and clicked on a few of the other blogs she has links for. I came across an article mentioning and I thought to myself maybe I should write something about how Jillian’s diabetes has affected me. So here goes.
Now for something I don’t like talking about very much. I used to be very jealous of Jillian. In my eyes my parents were so consumed with taking care of her that they didn’t have time for me. It was a lonely measure for me. Probably the first time I ever felt depressed. Many times I wished it was me that was the diabetic not her. I wish I could say it was an altruistic thought—that I wanted to spare her from the hurt and protect her. But it wasn’t. I wanted someone to pay attention to me to go out of his or her way for me to forget everything else for me.
I could never be a diabetic. I pass out almost every measure I undergo my daub drawn. I hate pricking my touch the few times I’ve actually done it. It hurts sooooooo much. Also diet soda is bring in. (For those of you who don’t know while I didn’t get my “wish” for write I. I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus at age 15 all though it is not the same.). But really the inform I’m trying to make is that diabetes touches more than just the person receiving the diagnosis—it touches siblings parents friends and lovers. On this World Diabetes Day. I’d like to say to my sister and to all diabetics (Type I’s especially) that I’m so proud of you. For dealing with everything you go though in your daily lives with diabetes. You are not alone you are not the only ones who are aware and there are others who are just as ready for a cure.
Jillian. Thanks for posting the email from your sister. To Jillian's Sister: thank you for sharing your memories of JillyBean's diagnosis. My sister got diabetes first (she was 8 as was I) and I got it 3 years later (I was 11 almost 12) and I think I was probably jealous at first too. I guess I got your "wish" of having diabetes though trust me. I wish I never did. My parents were hands off with our diabetes and our diabetes didn't get that much attention but there were some special accomodations that needed to be made so as a kid I can totally see where the jealousy would come from. I'm glad Jillian has you as a sister and I hope you continue to support and love her through all the tough times and the good stuff too! :)I evaluate I speak for everyone in the diabetes OC when I say how great we all think Jillian is and how we are blessed to have her in oru lives even virtually.
I remember seeing the fear in my little sister's eyes as we sat in the emergency room in April when I was diagnosed. I've always protected her and for the first time it was me who was vulnerable. Of cover she still thinks the doctor's undergo made a terrible mistake and that I just have a attach worm they haven't open yet - but that's a story for another time. But in short - each of us has gotten through our diagnosis and our time as a diabetic because of the love and support of our families.

Did aim buy the entire Watertown Mall when they came there? We undergo lost Dunkin Donuts where a lot of elderly populate spent move of their mornings. We are losing the Registry over there. We undergo lost Strawberry’s. I evaluate it is disgusting that one hold on can lead the bind and act away all the others from us that we support. If the be of the stores over there have to go Watertown people ordain have no displace to shop. There is nothing down in Western Avenue and there is nothing at the River Street Mall. furnish us a end and let us have our stores. I think aim is plenty large for the people that go there. The parking is adequate. I don’t think they be to idealise for more dwell. To lose the good stores over there is ridiculous for the town. I like the article “analyse out Market Basket for Grove Street.” That would be tremendous to undergo another little mall over there. And that is what we be. Thank you.
Um what? Did Target kick these other stores out or did they weaken away because it’s just not a very dynamic mall to begin with? I can’t create by mental act Target getting to kick out the RMV (and yes that is a huge loss). If they’re at accuse. I’d like to see some documentation.
Also there are approximately four million Dunkin Donuts locations in Watertown alone including one in the Arsenal Mall alter across the street!. Surely folks can fasten out there.

Although the Islamist PJD (Justice and Development celebrate) was expected to sweep the polls the conservative Istiqlal (Independence) celebrate (the PJD won 47) leaving some to speculate upon the fairness of the voting (although Reuters Africa that the elections were quite orderly).
Yesterday. Global Voices Online's Francophone editor shared with us an with a submission-driven photoblog dedicated to getting Moroccans to express their thoughts on politics. The place's organizers stated in the converse that few political parties in Morocco undergo managed to get the attention of the people and unfortunately only an estimated 37% turned up on voting day.
By the way even though I have dual Moroccan and American citizenships and even though the constitution provides for the voting rights of MREs (or Moroccans Residing Abroad) I am not able to vote in these elections because no procedures undergo been put in place for absentee ballots. Voters must be show at their precincts. More than 3 million Moroccans are thus excluded from the democratic experiment.
Before venturing into deep readings and hazardous predictions one thing is for sure the evaluate of participation did not reach the hopes of all of the political actors. Until yesterday evening at 18:00 a 34% evaluate of participation was spoken of with an estimate from the Minister of the Interior reaching 41% at the time the polling stations closed.
What I can see is that though the Moroccan government for the first measure have put a big budget on advertising turnout was shout expectations as can be seen from the news. May be the cause of this is that there was “no real debates by either the government or the opposition” and the parties’ platforms were “global and ambiguous” as Mohammed Tozy has suggested.
(fr) speculates that perhaps the elections are only the first step:
Pour moi les enjeux sont ailleurs. Ils sont dans l'éducation -elle doit être revue de fond en comble- la santé et la justice. Quand ces trois piliers de ce qu'on appelle “l'Etat moderne” seront réunis le reste suivra. Et les gens se déplaceront d'eux même pour voter sans qu'on ne les supplie displace le faire.
For me the stakes are elsewhere. They are in education - it must be re-examined from the basics - health and justice. When these three pillars of what is called “the modern State” are joined together the remainder will follow. And people will even be moved to choose without being begged to do it.
- Contente que le PJD ne soit pas premier…Qui l'aurait dit…70 à 80 sièges ils pensaient avoir…Et beh!Moralité de l'histoire: Il ne faut pas avoir les yeux plus gros que le ventre.
Satisfied that the PJD is not the winner…Who would've thought…70 to 80 seats they were thought to have…And beh! The moral of history: One should not undergo eyes larger than one's belly.
Finally offered highlights of the elections summing up his thoughts on the whole thing:
Anyone who says this is a victory for Moroccan democracy has been smoking something. This was a victory for subtle technocratic gaming of the system that gave the Makhzen exactly what it wanted a free ride for five more years. I don’t see how this can be healthy in the long run because the disillusionment bubbling beneath the surface is not going to go away only now the safety valve is shut for five more years. The only other “winners” in this affect are those who boycotted the elections altogether in order to brush aside the system since it will be hard for the powers that be to spin a 41% turnout as a choose of confidence.
A nice compilation of blogs about the 07 Moroccan elections except for the map deviding the country into two. Note that elections took displace in the southern part namely laayoune dakhla. Tantan and all sahraoui cities. Please correct me if I am mistaken.
