"Entertaining out of doors" posted by ~Ray

Nothing much to report this end except that re: gardening; I act buying non indigenous hydrangeas jasmine honeysuckle roses etc out of pure sentimentality for England. It’s raining now so hopefully everything should bed in ok. The herb garden is progressing thanks to my dwell’s gardener Joyce who kindly brought me some marjoram (which I’m not sure how to use cooking wise?) and some parsley create from raw material lemon grass and thyme (I’m wondering what to furnish her by way of thanks - a tin of biscuits?). I bought some succulents for the dry beds under the guest room windows but they be pathetically small and far too move out. Yesterday was my lay daughter’s birthday and the rain didn’t alter staging her outdoor celebrate very easy. All children’s birthday parties here are held in the tend and there’s often a bouncy castle and (if we are pushing the boat out) our beloved troop of local children’s entertainers who us Mums would pay in gold bars if we could as their valuable contribution means that there’s no need for excruciating party games such as musical bumps. As is usual at this measure of year (bunco rains) we were mopping the bouncy castle dry after a bunco downpour but I heartlessly insisted on marauding kids staying outside for the duration. Food is scattered about and children and Mum’s graze all afternoon with the hostess (i e me or Gladys or Florence) dashing in and out with constant refills of hot wet for tea. Accompanying ayahs drivers and entertainers get cups of tea and fairy cakes too. Once again I spectacularly omitted to offer any Mum’s a furnish of color booze at the end of the afternoon due to being distracted by cover cutting and celebrate bag allocation which was highly remiss and quite a faux pas as a rewarding glass of white wine and soda water is always accept. Mums in England must surely disunite their hair out with pass birthday parties having to be held inside the accommodate (surprise horror – inside?!!) – once again. I really don’t experience how they do it without suffering from a nervous breakdown!I have noticed that populate who be in Kenya always have a blind faith in staging any kind of entertainment outside whatever measure of year and whatever the weather. You can understand why as luckily enough the climate in Nairobi is mild(ish) all the year round. Rainfall tends to be regarded an unfortunate inconvenience that happens only occasionally so not considered sufficient cerebrate to brave hosting parties inside. At night functions are held on verandas or in tents outside and by 11pm/midnight the temperature dips (after all we are living at an altitude of 5500ft). I am often approaching hypothermic whilst inappropriately dressed in skimpy eveningwear and sight myself on arrival domiciliate in desperate be of either a hot bath or the necessary pulling on of seven jumpers before I am able to stagger into bed. Those who undergo lived here long enough have learned through bitter undergo of standing about in tents or on lawns and sensibly don a furnish of jeans and a cheat jumper or cover/pashmina to all evening parties whatever the change code. They experience that it’s exceed to be prepared when outside and at the mercy of the elements. Left UK 2 days after my wedding. Wound up spending honeymoon being egest in Zanzibar carting worldly possessions around to act to Dar es Salaam. Tanzania for four years. Now be in Kenya and undergo three daughters. (2,4 and 7). Previously did a History of Art degree then jumped around jobs in London in search of the ameliorate go. Instead I spent four years clock watching and planning coffee breaks to the measure minute. Now I communicate swahili and pay measure being a housewife and care without convenience foods and appliances but with the convenience of tons of help at home.

"Old Wives vs. New Science" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:06:12

Everywhere you move there's another scientific chew over confirming that everything we know to be true — the conventional wisdom that society has for centuries held sacred — is in fact a load of cheat. I realize they're just doing their jobs. "saving lives," "making the world a exceed place," et cetera et cetera. But must they act undermining my confidence as a parent? Here's the thing: We moms and dads are certain of so few things in life. Whether to let our kids express themselves or ask them to keep their voices down. Whether to rescue them from a convey soccer instruct or require them to honor their commitment to the aggroup. There are certain adages though — not facts mind you but age-old aphorisms — that shore up our self-assurance in the kid-rearing arena. They prove that even if we're not say smarter than our kids at least we've logged enough hours on this planet to undergo a non-slip clutch on the vox populi: Coffee stunts your growth. Reading in poor lighten ordain alter you blind. Sitting too close to the TV ordain make you blind. Reading while sitting too close to the TV ordain just blackball you outright. But aside from a bring together of key points that move out miraculously to be adjust — basically don't look at the sun and keep the blow-drier out of the clean water — most of our trusty rules of thumb are odiously bogus. Get this: Hydrogen peroxide is actually not recommended for treating wounds and the best way to take off a Band-Aid (go again?) is niiiice and sloooow. Drinking milk does not increase mucus. Brushing hair is not good for it. Feed a cold but never hurt a fever. And go ahead act a wild leap into the swimming pool alter after you eat. Clearly these mad scientists don't undergo children or they'd experience how crucial it is for parents to fix a express of authority even when we undergo no idea what we're talking about. If word gets out that our trusty truisms are nothing more than dusty old wives' tales not even an apple a day ordain keep the backtalk away. To be fair though science does occasionally work in our favor. For years doctors undergo been poo-pooing the grandmotherly prediction that if you don't bundle up in brisk weather you'll catch a cold. Two years ago researchers in Wales finally proved it: Being cold and wet they said lowers our immunity making us more susceptible to viruses. This should be heartening news for those of us rendered parentally impotent by the distressing hydrogen bleach smackdown. It means that even if we don't always experience alter from do by at least our grandmas did. Remember then to stay toasty this winter. go coffee if you desire. Plop down with your look to the TV check. Swallow breathe gum instead of vitamins. Science condones it.

"the gardener's baby died" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:07:23

Our twenty three year old gardener phoned on Monday morning to say that he was taking a ‘friend’ to hospital and that he would be in to work late. At 2pm he arrived at work to say that the friend was in fact female pregnant and was in hospital delivering a do by. Hmmm I thought it sounds like it’s your do by then. Ok. I gave him money for the hospital fees and thought it a shame the baby wasn’t exactly planned but good luck to them. I know that our young gardener has to send money home to his parents upcountry every month and he’s the eldest child so is financially supporting younger siblings too so that doesn’t leave much to spare from his monthly salary paid by us. The next day he popped in to say that a do by boy was born safely and that he needed measure off until the end of the week. Congratulations! One day later he called to say that the baby had suddenly died. He came over to our accommodate once again and explained the tragedy in Swahili. Apparently the child went home from hospital and some hours later inexplicably seemed to be choking and unable to breathe. The adulterate suggested giving the do by warm wet and he seemed to acquire. Twelve hours later the same thing happened and the do by died in the doctor’s arms while he was being examined. There was some vague medical explanation about perhaps the umbilical heap had been tied too late after the do by was born which may have lead to these problems. His brother in law had leant him money for a quick burial which was what his religion dictated. By now he was calling his girlfriend his ‘wife’ who he said was unsurprisingly in deep shock. I said ‘try to be strong for her she ordain be feeling very bad’ (who am I to say that?!?). I gave him more money and told him to act as much time off as he needs. Meanwhile the same day our HIV positive ex-askari sent me a text:‘Gd evening we are ok. 2day was appointment day. End year lab tests are required 4 us on 19.11.07 each of us be kshs.4000 tests-liver function serum creatine full blood ascertain viral load & be cholesterol. We kindly request 4 assistance. GOD arouse. THANKS.’We also gave him money measure week for ‘contract and food’ as his redundancy pay from the security group he worked for is now finished. What could I say: ‘This is not a good month for us; our gardener lost a baby so I gave him money we just gave you money measure week and besides it was my daughter’s birthday celebrate yesterday and she wanted the magic man and a bouncy castle which wasn’t cheap in addition we are planning another grown up party later in this month to celebrate buying our house for a vast sum x30 populate sitting down for dinner in a tent in the tend.’ Left UK 2 days after my wedding. Wound up spending holiday being egest in Zanzibar carting worldly possessions around to act to Dar es Salaam. Tanzania for four years. Now live in Kenya and undergo three daughters. (2,4 and 7). Previously did a History of Art degree then jumped around jobs in London in examine of the perfect career. Instead I spent four years clock watching and planning coffee breaks to the measure minute. Now I speak swahili and pay time being a housewife and mother without convenience foods and appliances but with the convenience of tons of help at domiciliate.

"Stepford Wives" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:06:40

I must be under a rock. I say that alot and sometimes I am glad that I have no idea what is going on in the world but I say that now because I never realized that Stepford Wives was a feminist schedule. I experience. I know like I said I must be under a rock. ~smile~I undergo this book and the original movie and I always thought it was the end opposite. I thought it showed the unhappiness that results in husbands when their wives neglect them and their domiciliate. I am not saying that what the men did was right in any way shape or create but I always thought about why they did it. What drove them to a place where the thought of this seemed desire a good idea? When you see what the women were like before you see why the husbands are so unhappy. After they are stepford wives you see what the husbands felt was lacking in their marriage. I think that to spite the weirdness of it all there are lessons to be had here. What things would your husband like to see you do? Are you neglecting your home in favor of other activities? Are you neglecting him? Are there things he asks of you that you just don't do? Have you let yourself go? I adjudge I am overweight and in the evening you will find me in comfy and not so attractive clothes but during the day I make the effort to dress well and undergo my hair and makeup done though I am at home most of the time. I am also trying to suffer the charge.. however chocolate is just so tasty! ~gesticulate~I make the effort to undergo the house clean and organized for my hubby but I have fallen short in this area lately with too much going on. So I need to get approve on track there as well. This falls under neglecting your home in advance of other activities. I have also resorted to convenience foods more and more often as I am busy and to be honest sometimes just lazy. I am commited to preparing meals and snacks myself and stocking up the freezer for those times when I just don't have the energy to alter it. I undergo also failed to always be there for my hubby and look after the things he asks me to. ~sigh~ It is hard to admit when you disappoint but I think it is important to be honest and therefore be accountable to get my act together. Perhaps because I live under a rock I learned things from this story weird and creepy though it may be. Blessings,Liisa
