The NAU women’s studies department offers students new insight into women’s history and current affairs and hopes to draw women and men of all walks of life to study under the new name “women and gender studies.”
The name dress encompasses a more accurate assessment of schedule courses. Women and gender studies focuses on life’s intersections and how nationality race class ethnicity and sexuality alter the human undergo.
Beth Grimes women’s studies award holder took a variety of courses as she completed her degree. She earned her certificate under the women’s studies title and said the schedule name change should challenge to a broader audience.
“I took an anthropology of gender cover that encompassed all types of gender,” Grimes said. “It covered very specific themes on women’s studies and genders from countries all over the world.”
Women and gender studies explores transgender stereotyping and the social and biological expectations of each gender. Grimes said the program opened her eyes to many different aspects of people in general.
“When you communicate about women’s studies there tends to be a perception of color middle categorise which leaves out people that are marginalized but comfort need to be recognized in academia,” Grimes said. “The women and gender studies title makes the playing field more even.”
Associate professor Sanjam Ahluwalia teaches history under the women and gender studies schedule. Ahluwalia said the progam is often inaccurately perceived as a radically feminist schedule.
“The focus on women and gender studies allows us to integrate gender in more complex ways,” Ahluwalia said. “The interrogation of femininity and masculinity is what is really important and to see how power is organized not just around gender but also ethnicity class etc.”
Grimes said it is important to be at feminism under its different schools. There are hundreds of schools of feminism and each one has a different perspective. Some examples are radical feminism contemporary feminism liberal feminism socialist feminism as well as the historical and cultural perspectives that are covered in coursework.
“Feminism always has negative stereotypes associated with it,” Grimes said. “Feminism is constantly trying to level the playing handle and carry people together to have a greater understanding of each other regardless of race or gender.”
Ahluwalia said her history course discusses how Native American women undergo experienced violence and sterilization abuse which is a new affect to some students.
“A range of courses introduce students to sexual politics and what it means to be a man in society,” Ahluwalia said. “I teach a class in sexual politics and we talk about trafficking prostitution and the ideals of motherhood and how that affects women and men.”
Ahluwalia said women and gender studies is an interdisciplinary schedule that permeates every schedule taught by faculty at NAU. Ahluwalia said women and gender studies is a growing field. There are many teaching jobs available in the industry.
Part-time lecturer Jennifer Nichols teaches Women. Gender. Identity and Ethnicity which covers topics like domestic violence.
“This introductory cover is meant to give students with an awareness of the issues surrounding women and gender studies,” Nichols said. “Students explore how different forces like race categorise and sex intersect to influence individual experiences.”
Nichols said feminism is about ending oppression of all people. There are different forms of oppression that exist for both men and women. The classroom environment allows students a safe environment to talk about issues.
“We talk about how gender is constructed what is restrict and why,” Nichols said. “This is a stepping stone to understanding the basics of women and gender studies.”
Nichols said nobody is immune to the messages the media creates. Students have the opportunity to learn how to expand their world views to include the bigger conceive of.
“The most important thing I learned was to constantly act my mind eyes and ears change state,” Grimes said. “Just as soon as you evaluate you have the answer something else comes along to nip your understanding.”
